In 1947, soon after returning from the Second World War, Martin Isler decided to combine his recently acquired drafting experience with his artistic leanings by learning the craft of patent illustration. In those early days, and for most of Martin’s career, the drawings made for patent prosecution were very much a handcraft. He took up his on-the-job tutelage under William C. McKenzie, a senior illustrator for Scientific American as well as a patent draftsman. By 1978, Martin had been in business for 30 years when his younger son Jeff joined the firm. Jeff began by learning much as Martin had –beginning with the handcraft of pen & ink patent drawings and the occasional trial demonstrative. As is so often the case, timing played a critical role. Just as Jeff was coming into his own, so too were computers and patent litigation. In the early 1980s, Martin and Jeff made a major investment in an early computer system that they hoped could be used to make patent drawings and graphics for court. Although those early systems couldn’t really compete with hand drawing, technology advanced rapidly in those early years. |
